Stretch Goal Unlocked - New Magic Items and Item Cards!
over 1 year ago – Sun, Aug 21, 2022 at 08:24:26 PM

Aaaand we unlocked the first stretch goal - additional magic items and item cards! We are also over 200% funded! Thank you, everyone!

Magic Item Cards

While we still need to design the new magic items (if you would like to see something specific, share it in the comments, though we have a ton of ideas!), I wanted to share with you a first sneak peek at the design of the cards! Of course, this is a very early preview, but I thought you would like to see it!

Of course, as we work on the cards, we will gather feedback from you on what you would like to see on them - so they are as useful during the games as they can be! The cards will be released as digital images, in print (in Deluxe tier or as a BackerKit add-on), as well as print-ready PDF with bleed so you can print them easily yourself!

It's been 15 days already, huh? Time sure flies fast - and so does the pledged amount, thanks to your generosity!

Community Shoutout: Landon Jamieson!

Running a KS campaign is hard (don't let anyone tell you otherwise). There are ups and downs, better and worse days... but thankfully, there are people in the community that can lift your spirit and help you feel better about what you do! One of them is Landon Jamieson - a superbacker, supercommenter and supersupporter of many TTRPG Kickstarters! You may have seen him commenting (wonderful daily stats updates!) and pledging on many campaigns - but you may not know that you can also find him on Twitter, or on his Youtube Channel! ZineQuest Creator Spotlight: The Shrouded Coast by Lenora’s Tiny Hut

Our friends at Lenora’s Tiny Hut have just launched their first Kickstarter for their Zinequest project, The Shrouded Coast.Lenora and Sean have been brainstorming this project for the past year and decided to use Zinequest to see how much interest there was in their idea. They plan to hopefully launch a hardcover setting guide based around The Shrouded Coast and the lands beyond in the future, but for now, you can support The Shrouded Coast on Kickstarter!

It's over €3000! + Behind the Scenes: Adventure Name (+ ZineQuest Creator Spotlight)
over 1 year ago – Sat, Aug 13, 2022 at 11:09:58 PM

Wow, that goes fast! We are already at €3000 point - halfway to the first stretch goal! Thanks for all the support!

Behind the Scenes: Adventure Name

What came first - the plot or the name? In the case of most adventures I've written, the story came first, but in the case of In the Court of the Frozen Queen, I remember that I came up with both at the same time.

The origins of the name are simple - one winter night, when thinking about what I will unleash upon the players in my group (I tend to run the adventures with my group before writing them up to see if they are good), I was listening to progressive rock classics. I was looking at the snow falling in the night behind the window as The Court Of The Crimson King by King Crimson started playing... and something clicked.

As the first verse progressed, I saw everything: the winter, ice-cold Queen Valkura, the bard Redis and an ancient evil with its schemes that connected everything. With all this, I knew I wanted to pay homage to King Crimson's classic and decided upon the name: In the Court of the Frozen Queen.

ZineQuest Creator Spotlight: TOMB by Brave New Worlds

Do you like mega-dungeons? Our friends at Brave New world have you covered with their ZineQuest Kickstarter with TOMB - a sprawling dungeon delve zine inspired by the adventures of our past and the ideas of the present!

Compatible with 5e, TOMB is being created as a streamlined and modern take on the concept of the mega-dungeon with a strong focus on providing an easy-to-run and tactically engaging experience for both sides of the GM screen.

Ten Days In Update + Designing the Adventure (+ ZineQuest Spotlight)
over 1 year ago – Wed, Aug 10, 2022 at 04:09:12 PM

We are ten days into the crowdfunding campaign, and it is better than I ever imagined before running it! We are steadily approaching the stretch goals! Thank you!

Designing the Adventure: Tackling Multiple Systems

One of the core features of all our adventures is their compatibility with multiple editions of the world's most popular role-playing game - the 5th edition and 3rd edition (and, by extension, also PF1 system). While this may seem daunting at first, in reality, for low-level adventures like In the Court of the Frozen Queen, the process is relatively easy. The most important things that need to be taken care of when translating the adventure between the system are:

  • Encounters and monsters: while it may seem that the 5e and 3rd edition monsters differ very much, the rules for building low-level encounters produce very similar results regarding the monster count and their respective CRs. The monsters themselves are very similar CR-wise if we look at SRD... and when designing new ones, one can just make them from scratch for each system, so they are the same!
  • Skill checks: despite 5e having a much simpler skill system than the 3rd edition, the skill check DCs are relatively similar at tier 1 and tier 2 levels of gameplay (the 3rd edition having higher a little bit higher DCs). In addition, mapping the skills between the systems is easy - as long as you start from the 3rd edition and move 5th - except for the Investigation skill from 5e, which has no direct mapping back to the 3rd edition but is very useful.
  • Magic items: this part... is the hardest one. The easiest way, at least for me, always the best way was to design the item in terms of lore and description and build mechanics for both systems from scratch - keeping them as similar as possible.

Taking care of these three areas makes the adventure work well in both editions. The only thing left is the presentation in the book... but that is something for another update.

Stretch Goals!
over 1 year ago – Fri, Aug 05, 2022 at 04:41:34 PM

Every great Kickstarter project needs some set of stretch goals, right? Being completely honest - I did not expect In the Court of the Frozen Queen to fund so fast, and I was caught by surprise - so I did not have anything prepared beforehand. However, this is now rectified - and In the Court of the Frozen Queen has some stretch goals - so we can make it even better!

Magical Items. Ten additional magical items connected to the lore of the adventure that adventurers can find during their travels. In addition to that, all magical items will be formatted as easy-to-use cards - with print versions available as part of the Deluxe bundle or as a BackerKit add-on!

Digital version of cards available for all backers Digital tier and higher, physical version available as part of Deluxe bundle or as BackerKit add-on.

Ambient Music. Every great story needs a fitting ambiance. Reaching this point will allow us to work with composers to bring a beautiful soundtrack to enhance the mood!

Available for all backers of Digital tier and higher or with VTT add-on. No physical release, digital only.

Bonus Dungeon. The story does not need to end here! Like in every great adventure, a large dungeon is waiting on the horizon for heroes that dare to enter it and uncover the final pieces of lore and find powerful treasures. Think this adventure's version of Durlag's Tower from BG: TotSC or Watcher's Keep from ToB.

Available for all backers as a part of the adventure.

Encounters: Shadows in Snowstorm. Additional 6 to 10 winter-themed encounters for heroes at levels 1 to 6 - perfect for expanding the game even more or use as sidequests for adventurers who want to explore the Coldstorm Valley.

Digital version of the available for all backers Deluxe tier and as BackerKit add-on. Physical version available as BackerKit add-on.
